The Threshold II — The Body of Light

In the last post, we established that the light body is what leaves during astral projection. Now we look at the map - the full framework of layered bodies that ancient and esoteric traditions have documented, argued over, and refined for centuries.

Other maps exist. The Theosophical tradition has its own system. Hermetic and Kabbalistic frameworks offer others. For this series, we’ll be working primarily from the model documented by Barbara Brennan in Hands of Light - one of the most detailed and accessible maps available in the Western esoteric tradition. Where it’s useful, I’ll note where other traditions converge.

You are not just a physical body. You never were.

Across cultures, across millennia, across traditions that had no contact with each other, the same understanding kept emerging: the human being exists in multiple layers simultaneously.

The ancient Egyptians understood the Ka - the vital spiritual double, the life force breathed into the body at birth that continues to exist after physical death. It was so fundamental to their cosmology that they built entire tomb structures to house it.

The Hermetic and Kabbalistic traditions extensively mapped the subtle bodies, understanding the human being as a system of multiple interpenetrating energy fields.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the rainbow body - jalu - describes what happens when a highly realized practitioner’s physical body dissolves into five radiant lights at death, the result of decades of Dzogchen meditation practice. The physical body doesn’t decay. It transforms.

The Merkabah - from the ancient words Mer (light), Ka (spirit), Bah (body) - is understood as a geometric vehicle of light surrounding and interpenetrating the physical body, two interlocking tetrahedrons rotating in opposite directions, facilitating access to higher dimensional planes.

Different languages. Different symbols. The same knowledge.

If you want a modern, science-meets-spirituality entry point into this territory, Dr. Joe Dispenza’s Becoming Supernatural is worth your time. His work on heart-mind coherence and elevated emotional states maps directly onto what practitioners of subtle body work have been doing intuitively for centuries. He gives it a language that bridges both worlds.

The seven layers

For our purposes, we’ll be working from Barbara Brennan’s seven-layer model. Each layer surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body, vibrating at a progressively higher frequency than the one below it. Think of them not as separate shells but as nested fields, each one extending further from the physical core.

Layer 1 - The Etheric Body (Root & Sacral Chakra)

The closest layer to the physical. The energetic double - a precise template of the physical body extending one to two inches beyond the skin. This is the layer most associated with the exit sensations in projection: the heaviness, the vibration, the feeling of pulling. When people describe the classic astral projection exit experience, they are describing separation at the etheric level.

Layer 2 - The Emotional Body (Sacral & Solar Plexus Chakra)

The second layer contains all emotional experiences. Unlike the structured etheric body, the emotional body is fluid and constantly shifting - containing all the colors of the rainbow, changing with emotional states. It extends several inches beyond the physical.

Layer 3 - The Mental Body (Solar Pleus Chakra)

Associated with thought, mental processes, and conscious awareness. Seen clairvoyantly as bright yellow light radiating primarily from around the head. Structured and grid-like compared to the fluid emotional body.

Layer 4 - The Astral Body / Light Body (Heart Chakra)

The bridge between the lower physical layers and the higher spiritual ones. Rose-tinged, cloud-like, extending about a foot from the body. This is the layer most people are referring to when they use the term “astral body” - and the layer most active during deep emotional connection with others.

Layer 5 - The Etheric Template (Throat Chakra)

A perfect blueprint of the physical body existing on a higher plane. Dark blue in appearance. Think of it as the original pattern from which the physical and etheric bodies are cast.

Layer 6 - The Celestial Body (Third Eye Chakra)

The emotional level of the spiritual plane. Soft, opalescent, gently glowing light extending two to two and a half feet from the body. This is the layer associated with spiritual ecstasy and connection to something larger than the individual self.

Layer 7 - The Ketheric or Causal Body (Crown Chakra)

The outermost layer. Gold or silvery gold, containing the entire auric field within it. This is the layer that holds the Kundalini force and connects the individual energy system to universal consciousness.

Note that the colors of the auric layers as described by Brennan differ from traditional chakra colors - these are two distinct but related systems describing different aspects of the same energy field. The chakra is the center; the auric layer is the field it generates. They are related but not identical.

For the purposes of astral projection, the layers you are most actively working with are the etheric - your exit vehicle - and the astral - your travel body. The higher layers become increasingly relevant as your practice deepens over time.

It was never hidden. It was always visible.

Before we move on, I want to give you something to do - not to read, but to see.

Go look at a Byzantine icon. A Renaissance Madonna. An Egyptian tomb painting. A medieval illuminated manuscript. Any of them. Look at what surrounds the figures.

The egg-shaped glow. The radiating light around the crown of the head. The figures floating above the ground. The wings. The halos.

You already know what you’re looking at now.

The people who created these images knew. They embedded this knowledge in plain sight - not hidden in the sense of concealed but occulted in the original meaning of the word: covered, waiting for the prepared eye. The glow is the auric field. The floating is the exit. The crown light is the chakra. The wings are not decoration - they are a map of direction. Up. High chakra. Clean exit.

You don’t know until you know.

Now you know.

What comes next?

The map exists. The layers are real. But knowing the territory is not the same as being prepared to enter it. Next, we talk about preparation - the environment, the protection, and the ritual framing that makes the difference between a clean experience and a chaotic one - The Threshold III - Preparing the Space
